How It Works
The laser delivers concentrated energy that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and converted to heat, damaging the follicle so it cannot produce new hair. Because it targets follicles in their active growth phase, and not all follicles are active at once, a course of sessions is needed to treat the whole area.
Most people need between six and eight sessions, spaced six to eight weeks apart, though this varies with the area treated and your hair type. Hair that does return afterwards is usually finer and lighter.
Why the Laser Type Matters
IPL devices, common in salons, emit broad-spectrum light and struggle to distinguish between the pigment in hair and the pigment in skin. That makes them less effective and less safe on darker skin tones.
An Nd:YAG laser uses a single longer wavelength that penetrates past the surface pigment to reach the follicle. It is the reason we can treat Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI, and why results tend to hold longer than salon IPL.
Areas We Treat
We treat most areas of the face and body for both men and women, including:
- Upper lip, chin, jawline and beard area
- Nose, neck and ears
- Underarms and arms
- Legs and bikini line, including Brazilian and Hollywood
- Back, shoulders and chest
- Abdomen and buttocks
Before Your Treatment
A consultation and patch test is required before your first session, booked at least 24 to 48 hours ahead. This checks how your skin responds and lets us set the correct parameters for your skin and hair type.
Shave the area to be treated the day before. Avoid waxing, threading, tweezing or epilating for at least two weeks before you start and throughout the course — the hair needs to be in the follicle for the laser to target it. Shaving and depilatory creams are fine.
Aftercare
Some redness and mild sensitivity for up to 24 hours is normal. Sun protection is essential afterwards, as treated skin is more prone to pigmentation changes with UV exposure. Avoid sunbeds, saunas, hot baths and strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is laser hair removal safe on dark skin?
Yes. Our Nd:YAG laser uses a wavelength that reaches the follicle without being absorbed by surface pigment, making it suitable for all skin tones including Fitzpatrick types V and VI. A patch test confirms suitability before treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
Typically six to eight, spaced six to eight weeks apart. The exact number depends on the area, your hair colour and thickness, and your hormones. We advise on a realistic course at your patch test.
Do I need a patch test?
Yes, before your first session, and it must be booked at least 24 to 48 hours in advance. This is a safety requirement, not an upsell.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most people describe a hot pinging sensation against the skin. It is brief and generally well tolerated, and modern systems are considerably more comfortable than older ones.
Should I shave before my appointment?
Yes, shave the area the day before. Do not wax, thread or tweeze for at least two weeks beforehand, as the hair must be in the follicle for the laser to work.
